Speaking in the House of Commons, Imran demanded that the Government insists big businesses pay their staff a fair, living wage.

During the debate on tax credits and help for working people called by the Labour Party, Imran called on the Government to stop their persecution of welfare claimants, and instead urged them to pressure large businesses with multi-million pound turnovers to pay their staff the living wage.

According to reports, the Chancellor is widely expected to cut tax credits paid to working families in Wednesday’s emergency budget in order to tackle the high welfare bill, but Mr Hussain argues that cutting tax credits will not leave working families better off and will instead push them further into poverty as businesses pay their staff such low wages.

The living wage supported by Imran currently stands at £7.85 per hour as opposed to the minimum wage rate of £6.50 per hour, and according to extensive research by the Living Wage Foundation, it enhances the quality of the work of staff and reduces absenteeism along with providing increased disposable income which is spent in the local economy.

Speaking on the living wage and the Government’s plans to cut tax credits, Imran said:

“This Government and the previous Coalition Government has repeatedly attacked the poorest and most vulnerable in society, and the announcement that they will cut tax credits shows that they are intent on continuing to do so.

“Tax credits are a lifeline to many working people in Bradford and across the UK who don’t earn enough because of low wages, but instead of cutting them we need to ensure people earn an adequate wage to prevent so many being dependent on top-ups to their pay packets.

“Indeed it is scandalous that many businesses who do not pay their staff a living wage are companies with multi-million pound turnovers, and I will be working hard to pressure the Government into insisting that such companies pay the living wage.”
