Officially opening Bradford’s first publicly funded non-invasive post-mortem facility after his decade long campaign to deliver the service in Bradford, Imran has hailed the pioneering facility and the benefits it will bring as a triumph. 

The new facility was opened by Imran on Friday 17 May 2019 following an agreement by Bradford Council after months of negotiations to operate and run the service free of charge for everyone, and it marks the culmination of years of Imran’s effort as a Councillor, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council and Member of Parliament to secure a free, permanent service in the District. 

Now operational, through the use of advanced new body scanning technologies the facility will allow for the Coroner’s Office to conduct a post-mortem in most cases where it is required without the need for an invasive and traditional post-mortem in order to determine the cause of death. It is also expected that it will offer improvements in how quickly post-mortems can be conducted and bodies can be released to families and friends. 

As part of his wider campaign to improve the service, Imran  has also held roundtable meetings with HM Coroner, West Yorkshire Police, Bradford NHS Trust and Bradford Council to discuss how all agencies in the District can better work together to deliver a more efficient and compassionate service for the family and friends of deceased individuals immediately after death, as well as how they can work together to provide a service at weekends and bank holidays. 

Speaking on the new non-invasive post-mortem facility, Imran said: 

“After ten years of hard work and lobbying at all levels to deliver this hugely important service, last month I was proud to open the new non-invasive post-mortem facility in Bradford. There is no doubt that it will deliver huge improvements in the way that post-mortems are conducted in the District, and it will stand as a pioneering example of the difference that new technologies and innovative public bodies can make.  

“The facility will, in most cases where it is required, eliminate the need for the distressing and undignified procedure of a normal, post-mortem, and I am proud that Bradford Council have agreed to run the service free of charge for everyone so that no one has to see their relatives put through a traditional post-mortem and so that their dignity in death is restored. 

“However, whilst the campaign to secure this new facility in Bradford is over, the hard work isn’t, and I will be continuing to press hard nationally with the Government to see this important service that delivers so many advantages for everyone involved to be rolled out across the whole country so that all can benefit from it.”
