Imran Hussain MP has today urged Bradford Council and the Environment Agency to ensure that the clearance of waste tyres in the aftermath of the Spring Mill Street fire in November takes place in a matter of days.

Almost a month on from the Spring Mill Street fire at a waste tyre storage facility in West Bowling that saw a major incident declared and one of the largest blazes in the region’s history, the site is still not cleared.

With the presence of a large number of burnt tyres and other toxic materials at the site which are contaminating the local environment and continuing to pose a significant threat to the health and safety of those living and working in the area, Imran has therefore pressed Bradford Council and the Environment Agency to get on with clearing the waste tyres from the site within days, not weeks.

The fire at the Spring Mill Street site started on Monday 16 November 2020 and continued to burn for almost a week, requiring the continued attendance of police officers and firefighters over several days and nights, and closing roads, schools and businesses in the local area with residents told to keep doors and windows closed.

Speaking on his call for the immediate clearance of waste tyres from the Spring Mill Street site, Imran said:

“Every day that waste tyres and other combusted materials remain at the Spring Mill Street site is another day that they present a danger to the health and safety of residents and the local environment, and Bradford Council and the Environment Agency need to act urgently to ensure they are cleared within days, not weeks.

“The dangers that the site poses cannot be underestimated and there can be absolutely no delay. The Environment Agency and Bradford Council must therefore ensure the rapid removal of these waste tyres and other materials before they present an even greater threat than they do already, and I am urging them do so before this year is out.”
